This is a yogic tradition, honouring the changing of seasons & connecting with the natural rhythm of the universe.
The summer Solstice is a time for rituals and ceremonies that honour the sun and the energies of the summer season - joy, abundance, growth and the beauty & diversity of life.

The Sun Salutation sequence creates

If we use breath awareness in our poses, we get to explore how far or how deep we should go and when we need to yield & surrender.
Our breath connects our mind & body to create relaxed awareness. If we move with the breath, we cultivate a sensitivity to the ever changing needs of the body & begin to tether the wild horse of the mind.

Breath work is an essential part of every yoga class/practice that I teach. Connecting into self is what makes the difference between making shapes with our bodies and practicing yoga.

Spring represents a new day; it’s the dawn in the wheel of the year. A new sun is rising. Life is waking up in the warm sunlight & your spirit feels ready to make a new start.
As though we are awakening from a deep slumber, our bodies begin to crave opening and gentle movement as we feel the return of outward energy, an unfurling like a new leaf. We seek the balance and equilibrium of this time as the day and night are equal.

Classes this week:
Tuesday 9.30am, Thursday 5.15pm & 6.30pm and Sunday 9.30 & 10.45am at @acresfieldclub

Wednesday 6.30pm at Lancaster House Hotel.

In this workshop we will explore Surya Namaskar B & Classical Sun salutations.
An opportunity to build on skills learnt in the first workshop but equally a stand alone workshop looking at :

🧘🏻‍♀️ Our individual intentions for our own practice

This is suitable for beginners or experienced Yogis alike there will be opportunities to ask questions and to play with and explore your own sun salutation practice.
We will end with an extended savasana with optional head massage so that you leave fully chilled & relaxed.

If you are attending the events today, please bring your own mat and blanket if you have them - I will have some with me if you don’t have your own.
If you are attending all 3 events, there are short breaks in between each, the cafe is open until 4pm but it would be good to bring your own snacks and drinks to sustain you throughout the day. Remember that in the stiller practices your body temperature may drop so wearing layers is always great. If you wish to bring a notebook for reflection, there will be moments to write or just be.

Why use an Altar in your yoga or meditation practice?

🧘🏻‍♀️In Hindu tradition, an altar, or mandapam, is a sacred place used for ritual and to make offerings to the gods/ universe. Even if you don’t practice Hinduism, as a yoga student, it can be quite powerful to have a sacred place like this to support your yoga and meditation practice.

“An altar can be a place for you to find your inner peace, to get quiet with yourself and go inward,” says SYJ teacher Ranjini Narayanamurti.

It can be a refuge from all of the crazy and hectic in our lives.

CREATING YOUR OWN PERSONAL ALTAR

🧘🏻‍♀️Find the right placement

🧘🏻‍♀️Keep it clean
As a sign of respect and to keep your altar a special place, care should be taken to keep the area clean. (Saucha)
Traditionally, yoga asana is done so that you can sit in prayer or meditation after.

🧘🏻‍♀️Add deities
In Indian households, people adorn the gods on their altars with flowers and place a piece of fruit as an offering.
If Hindu deities don’t speak to you, you can include any symbol that’s meaningful to you.

🧘🏻‍♀️Make it sacred
Once you’ve got the basics, it’s time to add in touches that will be sacred to you. Some common ideas include:
* A white light, like a candle
* Photos of deceased ancestors as a sign of reverence
* Palo santo or sandalwood incense
* A bell to signify the start and close of meditation
* A special stone or crystal
* Mala beads for counting during meditation or reciting mantras
Whatever you choose, what matters most is that it’s personal to you.

“It’s a place for you to create inner peace for yourself,” . “So make it pretty, make it beautiful, make it something that speaks to you.”

A collaboration between Temple Yoga, nickdaggerdj and williamsonpark. Nick will curate a set of dreamy, melodic house music creating the perfect atmosphere for us to mobilise our body, connect to our breath and find a mediate state of being before allowing the rhythm of the music to move us, as a collective, through 108 Sun salutations to honour the shifting tide of seasons and the delicate dance between light & dark.

The Sun salutations will be split into 9 sets of 12 and before each new set, we will pause and set intentions.
After we have moved through all 108 salutations, we will sink into a nourishing savasana as the music mellows and the energy of the practice settles within.

A powerful point of the year when the axis of the Earth pauses, shifts and moves in the opposite direction; the stillness between the end of one cycle & the beginning of the next.

This year I am humbled to be able to share three different practices in the beautiful, calming space that is The Ashton Memorial. Events here are limited so we are very lucky to be able to practice in this space and each practice will offer a different element to honouring The Solstice.

The first, is a gentle practice, offering gentle movement and opening of the physical body to prepare us to drop deeply into relaxation as we are enveloped by the mystical sounds of the gongs.

A restful, gentle practice to restore balance within.

The first of the month and almost a new moon - The PERFECT time to reintroduce myself and tell you about my new offerings.

I’m Natalie from Temple Yoga and I’m just beginning my journey back to yoga and now massage as well. I’m passionate about nurturing & nourishing the body and mind and I’m excited to announce that I have now fully qualified in Deep Tissue Massage, trained by THE amazing Nicola Garrett form Exhale, Lancaster. Massage is a perfect compliment to a yoga practice & other movement practices or purely for relaxation.

For those of you who do not feel drawn to practice 108 Sun salutations but still wish to honour the Summer Solstice tomorrow, we have opened up some spaces on our mini gong bath in the exclusive & beautiful space of the Ashton Memorial @williamsonpark
There are limited spaces available and the gong bath begins at 8pm and will last 45 min. As we emerge from our cocoon of the Ashton Memorial the sun will be beginning its descent over Morecambe Bay and you are welcome to stay in the park to watch as it disappears from view.
